How long has it been since a friendly outsider looked closely at your operations and gave you objective insights?

Competitiveness Review
Competitiveness Review (CR) is a full-scale analysis of all of the processes in your manufacturing plant, from the shop floor to the administrative office. This assessment tool provides an on-site evaluation of your manufacturing operations, comparing your plant to other plants in the your company’s database.  It helps you pinpoint what, if any services you may need in order to improve your business.

Competitiveness Review is offered to U.P. Manufacturers free of charge.

Performance Benchmark Service
A more in-depth study is completed when the comprehensive Performance Benchmark Service (PBS) is used. This widely acclaimed service has produced more than 7,000 benchmarking reports for companies all around the U.S. These reports offer comparisons on more than eighty metrics.

After completing one of nine user-friendly questionnaires, your company will receive a customized report comparing your plant to similar plants in areas such as: sales, growth, productivity, schedule integrity, delivery, scrap and rejects, computer use, and in more than seventy other measures. PBS staff queries their database of more than three thousand plants and custom-selects a set of twenty-five or more companies that fit your industry-price-volume-activity profile.

The Performance Benchmark Services are free to all Michigan manufacturers.

The process works like this:

1.

Northern Initiatives offers the PBS through its partnership with the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center.

2.

The initial questionnaire should be completed and can be accessed here: www.mmtc.org/services/pbs/core.asp

3.

Return the questionnaire to: Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC), 47911 Halyard, Plymouth, MI  48170 or Fax to (734) 451-4201.

4.

Data is checked for clarity and consistency. If errors are suspected you will receive an inquiry call or email.

5.

PBS’s staff selects data comparison samples from its 7,000-large database of manufacturers with which your information is then compared. Those selected have similar product lines, customer bases, piece prices, order volume, design roles, and processing/assembly mix.

6.

Processing and mailing of the report usually requires approximately two weeks. Northern Initiatives business development services staff is then available to assist you in interpreting the results.

MMTC’s Performance Benchmarking Service is your best source for current, comprehensive performance comparisons for small and medium-sized manufacturing plants.  It has been recommended by: Precision Metal Forming Association, the National Tooling and Machining Association, the Society of the Plastics Industry, the National Association of Printers and Lithographers, the Association of Manufacturing Technology, the National Association of Metal Finishers, the Wiring Harness Manufacturers Association, and the Metal Treating Institute, among others.

Marketing Assessment
Do you have the tools and procedures in place to implement effective sales and marketing activities?  Many small manufacturing companies are strong on product but lack expertise in the practical aspects of industrial marketing. Northern Initiatives assists companies with solutions to their sales and marketing problems through the Marketing Assessment, a tool used to ensure that all the elements for a successful marketing effort are either in place or identified.  The assessment highlights strengths and weaknesses and, in so doing, assists in prioritizing the building blocks necessary to achieve profitable sales growth.
